News Release: The Arts revolution continues on 118th Avenue with the opening of The Carrot!

Edmonton, June 19, 2007 – Creating community spirit, meeting neighbours and providing support for local artists, are the goals behind the opening of a new coffeehouse on Alberta Avenue. The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse is the latest project of Arts on the Ave (AOTA), a coalition of artists who live and work on 118th Avenue and who are helping to drive revitalization of the area.

Talking its name from a quote by French artist Paul Cezanne (“The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution.”), Arts on the Ave Executive Director Christy Morin says the arts coffeehouse will be a place where great things happen. “The ideals of a ‘community’ are where everyone chips in to help each other; in this case, we can help further the work of individual artists who call this area home. It’s like the analogy of a barn-raising; each farmer works their own land but everyone comes together to help their neighbours build their barn. It’s the working together that brings out everyone’s best and ensures the community prospers as a whole.” She says The Carrot will be a place where artists can find support and where the community can come together and have a great cup of coffee. “That sense of ‘a place where everyone knows your name’ is our hope and dream for what we can build with this coffeehouse.”

The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse opens this Friday, June 22 at 9351-118th Avenue (the old Popular Bakery site). Live music will be provided by Edmonton’s White Cat
