About Plaza Bowl

Located in the basement of a strip mapp, not far from the 118th Avenue traffic circle on 104 Street, this 16-lane, 5-pin bowlerama has been rolling along since 1960, and not much has changed over the years. Take a step back in time with Betty, Veronica and Archie. It still relies on the tried-and-true manual scoring, so you can brush up on your math while you bowl.

A new play written by Collin Doyle and Jeff Page

Featuring Chris Bullough, Lora Brovold, Amber Borotsik, and Garett Ross

Directed by Jeff Page

Dates: April 29 – May 9
Location: Old Cycle Building, 9351 – 118 Ave
Presented as part of Caught in the Act: the theatre series on 118 Ave

Cast members from The Gift, a play currently running as part of the Caught In The Act Theatre Series

Three friends gather to open a mysterious gift left to them by an old friend. This gift, however, will severely test their relationships and memories, and will reveal a devastating group secret. The Gift is a fiercely funny portrayal of love, loyalty, betrayal, and the lies we mutually conjure to survive together.

The Gift, like Collin Doyle’s award winning The Mighty Carlins, is set in Edmonton, with a poignant sense of humour that captures our city’s distinctive charm.

Arts on the Ave and the Avenue Initiative have teamed up to create and curate Caught in the Act: the theatre series on 118 Ave. The series takes place in the developing performance matrix that extends between the Old Cycle Building and the Avenue Theatre on 118 Ave, straddling 92/93 streets.

Caught in the Act runs from April to September, and includes Shakespeare, original plays and festival productions. Featured events include the Edmonton debut of a new work that will travel to the Edinburgh Fringe later in the summer, a festival of Irish Theatre, and, for the second year in a row, a Fringe BYOV over the river.

Conceived by Christy Morin of Arts on the Ave and Judy Allan of the Avenue Initiative to provide a variety of live entertainment options in a neighborhood that is invigorating its rich cultural potential. The Old Cycle Building is under long term renovations to become the cultural hub of Edmonton’s north side.

Collin Doyle

Collin Doyle is an Edmonton born playwright who champions Edmonton’s combination of working class sensibilities and cultural sophistication, and is equally comfortable watching the Oilers and the ESO. The Mighty Carlins won a Sterling Award for Outstanding New Play and the Alberta Playwrights’ Network New Play Award.

Jeff Page

Jeff Page is a local theatre veteran known for his work with the Citadel, the Mayfield Dinner Theatre, Theatre Network, and a plethora of independent productions. He has directed for the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, Firefly Theatre, the University of Alberta, and has helped develop new plays with many local writers including Cathleen Rootsaert, Collin Doyle, Kristina Nutting, and Ava Jane Markus.

Chris Bullough

Chris Bullough is a popular Edmonton actor who has won Sterling Awards for his leading roles in Richard III and Love’s Labours Lost for the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. He has worked with the Citadel, Theatre Network, Workshop West, Teatro la Quindicina and Alberta Theatre Projects.

Lora Brovold

Lora Brovold is an actor of rare passion who was seen blistering the stage last summer in The Comedy of Errors and Titus Andronicus with the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. She has previously acted with Shadow Theatre, Northern Light Theatre, Concrete Theatre and Studio Theatre.

Amber Borotsik

Amber Borotsik is a muti-talented performer who has received acclaim in both the theatre and dance worlds. She has acted with Shadow Theatre and Northern Light Theatre, and has danced with Mile Zero and numerous independent productions, including the award winning Scythe.

Garret Ross

Garret Ross is a veteran actor with credits at the Citadel, Workshop West, Northern Light, Leave it to Jane and Catalyst Theatre. He has recently toured the world with Nevermore for Catalyst Theatre.
