Homegrown talent takes the stage Saturday nights at the Carrot. Come down at 7 PM for original music, poetry, comedy and more at Edmonton’s newest open mic experience. Want to play? Just bring your guitar, your poems, your jokes, yourself and show up early to get on the list. Sets should be no more than 15 minutes for music and 10 minutes for spoken word, poetry, comedy.

On April 2nd, Join Mayor Stephen Mandel and the Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton (PACE) at the 25th Annual Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts. Let’s celebrate some of the best artistic talents our city has to offer, in an evening of awards and performance from some of Edmonton’s most talented artists.

Our very own Arts on the Ave  and Wendy Hollo, Executive Director of the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts here on 118th Ave have both been nominated for the John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts!

Featuring performances by Tommy Banks, Christian Hansen and the Autistics, Colleen Brown, Citie Ballet, Sandro Dominelli and the cast of Caution: May Contain Nuts.

Call for gallery artists and artisans

The sixth annual Bloomin’ Garden Show and Art Sale is on Saturday, May 12 from 9am to 4pm. This is a fantastic event that combines gardening information and products with an artisan market and gallery all in a beautiful, serene atmosphere with classical music. The event brings out over 1000 gardeners and shoppers from around the city to our Avenue. We love showcasing our great local talent and our revitalized community along 118 Avenue.

Gallery artists:
Theme for the festival: Garden, landscape & mothers.
A maximum of 3 works will be accepted.
There will be a commission of 30% on all sales.
If you have prints, cards or a small art piece, please donate something to our raffle draws.
Send your bio, photos of your work and dimensions of the pieces you wish to enter to bloomin_gallery@albertaave.org by March 31, 2012.
Our curator Lorraine Shulba will be in touch with you by April 10, 2012, after your work has been reviewed by a three member jury panel.
Artisans:
We are looking for garden-related products as well as a variety of hand crafted items (e.g. pottery, jewelry, beauty products, textiles) with a focus on items appropriate for mothers’ day gifts.

Show cost $40.
We have limited space and many interested artists, please choose either the gallery or artisan market.

With a 7:30pm sign up, the Slam will start at 8:00pm. People are welcome to submit one poem that’s maximum 5 minutes in length (unless you are wanting to do a string of Haikus or something similar). All styles welcome.

There will be a $100 prize for the first place poet, thanks to our friends at the Norwood Neighbourhood Association.

This arts program celebrates Black History Month by embracing the many African nations that are represented in the community.

In the final week, there will be a capoeira demonstration, storytelling, music and poetry.

Friday February 24, 7:30pm The Capoeira Academy Edmonton will talk about the history of the martial art, including its ties to African slaves in South America. Following the demonstration, there will be a solo steel drum performance by Kelvin from the Trincan Steel Orchestra.

Tuesday February 28, 7:00 pm will be an evening of storytelling with artists sharing stories of immigration, mythology and growing up in Jamaica.  Featuring Tololwa Mollel and others.

Wednesday February 29, 7:30 pm, the Peoples Poet closes off the month with various poets and musicians celebrating multiculturalism.

This community-based celebration includes a gallery wall of visual artists, whose art is also featured in the “Five Artists One Love” exhibition at the AGA. Please come and see the variety of work at the Carrot all month.

The evening will be full of music and dance, starting Capoeira and moving to steel drumming.

I was first introduced to the martial art of Capoeira through my brother, and for those who haven’t had the introduction, let’s have Wikipedia help out:

Capoeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [kapuˈejɾɐ]) is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for leg sweeps.

There’s a whole lot more to learn about this art, and the best way to do that is to see it for yourself. On Friday February 24th, 7:30pm, Capoeira Academy of Edmonton will do a demonstration.

Following this, we’ll be graced by Kelvin, who plays in the Trincan Steel Orchestra. He will play the steel drum for us, brining a little warmth of the Caribbean to our cozy little cafe this February.

As with the rest of the Rhythms of the Earth Art Series, this is a free event. Hope to see you there!
