Afro Beauty and Fashion at the Carrot

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

February 22nd at the Carrot – that’s tomorrow folks – we’ll be welcoming Dr. Jean Walrond and Mama Afro for an evening of fashion and beauty, as part of “Rhythms of the Earth”.

Dr. Walrond stopped by the Carrot last week, and had with her samples of her textiles which she will be showing on Wednesday. Fashioned after North and West African tradition with stunning colours and patterns, each piece was so beautiful. Dr. Walrond will tell us how it is done (and maybe even show us). So for all you DIY people out there, this will be a great night to learn how pattern and dye your own table runners, scarves, napkins, tablecloths – you name it!

Celina, from Mama Afro will be our other guest for the evening,  and will demonstrate how braiding is done. Mama Afro is one of the many businesses on the Ave, and we are excited to collaborate with them for this evening.

Hope to see you there!

Rhythms of the Earth is Underway!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

The Rhythms of the Earth Art Series kicked off this past weekend. We’re celebrating Black History Month at the Carrot through music, lyrics, drums, art, words, and dances from all over Africa. Garth Prinsonsky and Adje Performers got us going, Garth bringing reflections of life in Namibia through song, and Adje filling the Carrot with joyous drumming. If you weren’t able to come, there’s still a lot to look forward this February, with a Drumming Workshop being the next event. Come on by on Thursday, February 7th, 2:00  if you would like to try your hand at playing djembe.

Check our calendar for full event listing.

Tabula Rasa Fundraiser

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Arts on the Ave is hosting a fundraising “tabula rasa” painting event at the Nina Haggerty gallery, on 118 Ave, on Saturday, February 25. And just what is a tabula rasa, you might wonder. Well, it is a Latin term meaning a “clean slate.” And that is exactly what you will receive. Here is how it works – for a mere $118 you get a blank canvas. We supply paint and brushes. We will also provide food and wine to help liberate your inner artist (come on, you know there is a little Picasso, Rembrandt or Warhol in there somewhere). Our crew, led by AOTA board member and artist Glen Ronald, will provide encouragement, insight and inspiration to help you create your own personal masterpiece. Bring your friends and help us raise funds to support the amazing work of the Carrot and Arts on the Ave. Spaces are limited, so please contact tabularasa118@gmail.com to reserve your spot

The Carrot Celebrates Black History Month

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Rhythms of the EarthFebruary will find the Carrot Coffeehouse full of festivities celebrating Black History Month, with an event called “Rhythms of the Earth”. You won’t want to miss the artists we have lined up!

All month long you can come and see the visual gallery, comprised of local artists that are also part for the “5 Artists One Love” exhibition at the AGA. The Carrot will feature work by: Khiry Crooks, Lorien Maheu, Adrian Louden, Brett Miles, and Elsa Robinson.

Other highlights for the month include:

A Poetry Slam with established poets around the city, including some of this city’s up and coming young artists, and a hip hop performance by The Overachievers.

Adje Performers will make another appearance on the Ave – if you missed them at Deep Freeze, you won’t want to miss them here! They’ll help get the month warmed up with their drumming this weekend!

After listening to Adje, if you are inspired to learn how to play a djembe, take a Drumming Workshop with DrumAdrumDRUM.

Dr. Bitupu, Junetta Jamerson, and Tololwa Mollel are all fantastic Storytellers. From their lips you will hear oral stories of immigration that have been passed down through generations, mythology, and other traditional stories.

Mama Afro will do a braiding demonstration, and Dr. Jean Walrond PH. D. will talk about her clothing designs, inspired by Northern and Western Africa tradition.

So as you can see, there’s a lot to look forward to this February, as we celebrate Black History Month. Come enjoy a hot beverage celebrate with us!

Ice, Hockey, Dancing and Explosions In The Sky: Last Minute Deep Freeze Highlights

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Deep Freeze Fest is just around the corner, and we thought we’d highlight some things you may not have noticed in the our packed program, as well as some openings you may have assumed would be all filled up.

Ice

Yes, the ice carving competition is still a go. With the help of some refrigeration, we will have ice to carve, so come out to see the masters at work. There are snow carvings on site, too, for those of you who miss the white stuff.

Hockey

The hockey tournament is a go as well. I believe there its still at least one opening for a team, so if you’d like to play some good ole’ fashioned street hockey, get in touch with us.

Dancing

The Surf’s Up Dance with the Tsunami Brothers will be a blast (and it includes a retro-inspired swimwear fashion show). Some tickets are still available. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, towel and such along for the giant outdoor hot tub.

Colorful Explosions In the Sky

You may have missed this in the program, but this year’s Deep Freeze features FIREWORKS marking our fifth anniversary! The show starts at 6 PM, so even young folks with early bedtimes can enjoy it (I suppose there is something good about our 5 o clock darkness). It will be over before long, so make sure you are around right at 6 to take in the display.

Theses are just some highlights but there is a lot more going on this weekend. We’ll see you on site this Saturday. Find out more at deepfreezefest.ca, or download our full program.

Snow Globe Festival of Children’s Theatre

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Come down to Avenue Theatre (9030 118 Ave) for the Snow Globe Festival of Children’s Theatre! The festival runs from December 20-24.

The festival has three productions specifically for young audiences and offers an accessible and affordable alternative to holiday events. A festival pass ranges from $19.75 to $28.00. For that you get to see all three productions, plus the Holiday Half Time Show. Tickets to individual shows are $8 to $10.

Ellen Chorley, the artistic director of Promise Productions and producer of the festival, has an amazing track record with Theatre for Young Audiences at the Fringe, as well as high school residencies and a collection of other accomplishments.

There have already been over 1300 student tickets sold to the festival and they’re hoping the evening shows will be equally as successful.

You can find more information on the festival here:
