Let’s not fool ourselves – the weather made things pretty incredible too – but each one of our helpful hands made things come to life. So thanks to all those that volunteered and helped Deep Freeze Winter Festival. Thank you for welcoming festival visitors to our community. They experienced a magical winter festival on the Ave!
There’s not even that much left of it now, but have a wonderful winter.

Warm regards,

All month long you can come and see the visual gallery, comprised of local artists that are also part for the “5 Artists One Love” exhibition at the AGA. The Carrot will feature work by: Khiry Crooks, Lorien Maheu, Adrian Louden, Brett Miles, and Elsa Robinson.

Other highlights for the month include:

A Poetry Slam with established poets around the city, including some of this city’s up and coming young artists, and a hip hop performance by The Overachievers.

Adje Performers will make another appearance on the Ave – if you missed them at Deep Freeze, you won’t want to miss them here! They’ll help get the month warmed up with their drumming this weekend!

After listening to Adje, if you are inspired to learn how to play a djembe, take a Drumming Workshop with DrumAdrumDRUM.

Dr. Bitupu, Junetta Jamerson, and Tololwa Mollel are all fantastic Storytellers. From their lips you will hear oral stories of immigration that have been passed down through generations, mythology, and other traditional stories.

Mama Afro will do a braiding demonstration, and Dr. Jean Walrond PH. D. will talk about her clothing designs, inspired by Northern and Western Africa tradition.

So as you can see, there’s a lot to look forward to this February, as we celebrate Black History Month. Come enjoy a hot beverage celebrate with us!

Work on the building has finally begun! Inside, old clutter and hazardous materials have been removed in preparation for construction this fall. Those renovations will include a new front entry, brand spanking new washrooms, complete new sprinkler and mechanical systems, and a clean “white box” interior. As many of you know, they can’t meet the required number of parking spots on-site. They are currently working on a variance for that, and are optimistic for positive solutions.

The improved space will be ready in the spring of 2012! Arts Habitat + Arts on the Ave are looking forward to providing great studio, performance, gallery, office, meeting, classroom, and rehearsal spaces to artists, cultural industries and social enterprises! This will be for short-term use until the future renovations for Phase 2.

Speaking of which … The design team heard the excellent feedback you the community offered at their spring Design Charette, and is working to incorporate it into a complete design vision for the Phase 2 redevelopment. Stay posted for more on that!

Arts Habitat Association + Arts On the Ave thank the City of Edmonton for its ongoing commitment to the project through the building purchase and essential building code upgrades. They also thank the Government of Alberta and the Alberta Lottery Fund for their contribution through the Community Facility Enhancement Program for additional program-specific renovations.

When: Saturday, June 25th

Where: Plaza Bowl, 10418 – 118 Ave

Time: 7 till 10 pm.

Who: Anyone in the community who wants to help – families and groups will be entering teams. Please join us by entering a team of your own.

How: Each team must have four or five members; each member must raise a minimum of $50. The goal is to raise $650 per team. Tax receipts are available for donations of $50 or more. Pledge forms can be picked up at The Carrot (9351 -118 Ave) or downloaded from the website: www.artsontheave.org.

To register: Email info@artsonthehave.org

Why: Your involvement in the Avenue and Alleys, Bowling for Bucks! will help pay for more Arts on the Ave (AOTA) projects and programs and keep the Carrot growing.

There will be prizes for the top fundraiser as well as for the best team, the highest score, the most strikes, the most gutter balls, and for the highly coveted lowest score.

How many members can each team have?

Each team must have four or five members.

How do you raise money?

You simply just have to ask friends, family members, co-workers, neighbours. Explain that it is a fundraiser for AOTA.

Do you HAVE to raise $650?

The goal is to raise $650 per team. However, teams don’t HAVE to raise that amount. As long as each member raises a minimum of $50 each, the team will be eligible to play. If members are unable to raise the $50 themselves, they pay $50 themselves.

Any age restrictions?

This is a family event, so people of all ages are welcome. If you have kids on your team, please have a parent or adult help them get sponsorships.

What about my belly?

There is a cash bar at the alley and snacks will be available as well.
