Call for PROFESSIONAL VISUAL ARTISTS
As the look of 118th Avenue evolves from the new sidewalks and streetlights to the new facades of businesses, The Avenue Initiative is adding another exciting element to the landscape – murals on electrical boxes. And WE NEED YOU!
We are looking for professional artists willing to volunteer in mentoring young emerging artists by painting the electrical boxes along with Ave with a mural. Young artists will be selected in July and matched with an appropriate professional artist. An electrical box will be assigned to each pair and you will have the opportunity to work with the young artist in the design.
The only requirements are:
You have a desire to collaborate with and mentor a young emerging artist.
You live between 75th Street & 104th Street and between 111th Avenue & the Yellowhead.
You are a professional artist.
You are ready to have some fun!
Painting will take place over 1-2 days in August and the murals will be revealed at the Kaleido Festival in September.
This is YOUR COMMUNITY – be a part of the revitalization process and leave your mark on the Avenue!
Please contact Jaimie at 780.721.8417 or tjclem@telus.net for more information or to get involved.

Hey Community! We need YOUR OPINION!
The Avenue Initiative is taking one more step to beautify the Avenue and we need your help. But don’t worry, you don’t have to for volunteer for anything!
Murals will be painted on the electrical boxes that line the Ave and we would like your input as to what themes you think the murals should have. The Avenue is rich with diversity and we want to celebrate it. Help us create these murals to REFLECT YOU!
Send your ideas for themes to Jaimie at tjclem@telus.net or call 780.721.8417.
Watch for the murals to be unveiled at the Kaleido Festival in September.

Plans for the redevelopment of the building into a community focused arts/arts friendly facility continue!
Partners Arts Habitat Association and Arts on the Ave have just completed an intensive consulting workshop with expert in the field of cultural rejuvenation – Toronto Artscape CEO Tim Jones. They continue successful discussions with the City to develop a long-term plan for the building use and rejuvenation. At the same time they recognize that the building can and should be put to use in the interim. Public information sessions will be held in the near future to include the community on those developments.
Look forward to new life in the building soon!
To those of you who participated in the November Cycle Building Visioning Session, your input has been invaluable. A summary of your comments can be found on the following links:

Liz Nichols’ review of Hockey Stories for Boys is also an ode to a neighborhood in rebirth.
Her article highlights many of the shining lights in the ever-brightening story that is Alberta Avenue. And you know what, I couldn’t find the phrase “former troubled neighborhood” anywhere. Perhaps the past is finally giving way to the future.
Read her excellent piece online now at http://www.edmontonjournal.com/entertainment/cracked+hilarity/2209459/story.html.
Hockey Stories for Boys runs now through Sunday at the Avenue Theatre. You can get more details on our website here.

The following is a news release provided by Judy Allan, head of the Avenue Initiative.
Area being transformed through the arts

Handy Bakery, one of the newly renovated storefronts on the Ave.
Musicians, artists of all stripes, and those who enjoy art have come together with the City to transform 118th Avenue into a vibrant arts destination. The Alberta Avenue Revitalization Initiative is a winner on many levels: improved sidewalks and streets, updated storefronts, new businesses and festivals; and now, a national award.
The Institute of Public Administration in Canada/Deloitte Public Sector Leadership bronze award for municipalities was presented to the City of Edmonton in Toronto on Nov. 5. The award recognizes organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership by taking bold steps to improve Canada, through advancements in public policy and management.
“This award is a tribute to the many people who recognized this neighbourhood’s potential and took action, and continue to take action, to transform the area,” said Ward 3 Councillor Tony Caterina.
“The success of the Alberta Avenue Initiative lies in the cooperative and collaborative way in which citizens, administration and Council worked together to make changes happen on 118 Avenue,” said Ward 3 Councillor Ed Gibbons.
“In accepting this award, we gratefully acknowledge the many leadership contributions made by community, business, City administration and City Council to the Alberta Avenue Revitalization Initiative,” says Kathy Barnhart, Branch Manager, Neighbourhood and Community Development with Community Services.
The Alberta Avenue Revitalization Initiative began in 2005, as a result of a request by citizens for better lighting on 118 Avenue. The area had fallen into disrepair, and crime was an issue. The ward Councillors for the area knew that better street lighting would help, but more had to be done to help turn the neighbourhood around.
“The area is really quite beautiful,” says Judy Allan, Alberta Avenue Initiative Project Coordinator. “It is close to downtown and major transportation routes, and is bookended by NAIT at one end, and Edmonton Northlands and Rexall Place at the other. There’s every reason why this area can, and should be, a desirable place to live.”
Through public consultation, residents and business owners created a vision for the community they want their neighbourhood to become: a community with safe streets and spaces, strong community life, thriving economy, and environmental well-being.
A community steering committee guides initiatives, and an integrated service team, comprised of staff from all City departments, support the work. Alberta Avenue’s success story has spawned similar revitalization efforts in Jasper Place, McCauley and McDougall/Queen Mary Park neighbourhoods.
“Everyone involved in transforming Alberta Avenue should be very proud of what has been accomplished,” said Christy Morin, founder of Arts on the Avenue. “People who visit or move here will see the results of what happens when people come together and truly live as a community.”
The approach to revitalizing Alberta Avenue is also an example of what the City wants to achieve through the Great Neighbourhoods : all City departments working together with residents, businesses, community leaders and other stakeholders to shape the future of where we live.
“We see tremendous potential for this to have a sweeping impact on the way in which the City of Edmonton interacts with its citizens, and how citizens can engage in the development and sustainability of their neighbourhoods,” said Ms. Barnhart.
