Alberta Avenue Goes Global!!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Not sure if you’ve noticed lately, but Alberta Avenue, and the revitalization taking place here, is ALL OVER the media.

You may have picked up Avenue Magazine this month to find Christy Morin, President of Arts On The Ave, featured as one of their “Top 40 Under 40″. You can read that article online at http://www.avenueedmonton.com/articles/page/item/christy-morin.

Or, perhaps you’ve been over to the City of Edmonton website, where The Avenue Initiative is featured with an image on the front page, linking to a story and a video about the exciting changes happening on Alberta Avenue these days. Our very own Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse and Kaleido Festival are mentioned as well.

If you haven’t caught the “Avenue Fever” yet, perhaps Thursday is your day. Here is the official word from the Avenue Initiative;

Global Edmonton is taking the News Hour On the Road to Alberta Avenue! Tune into the News Hour at 6.00 on Thursday, November 5th to see Gord Steinke, Lynda Steele and the rest of the Global Edmonton team broadcasting live from the Alberta Avenue Farmer’s Market and The Carrot Coffeehouse.

We need YOU to help show Edmonton what a great neighbourhood Alberta Avenue is. We need both the Farmers’ Market and The Carrot filled with all the great people who live in the area. Bring the whole family down, tell your neighbours, bring your friends!

Both Global News at 5 and 6 will be broadcast from Alberta Avenue but during the 6 o’clock news you see stories about things happening in Alberta Avenue, a live interview with Judy Allan on the Avenue Revitalization, as well as live footage from the Farmers’ Market and The Carrot.

At the Farmers’ Market (9210 118 Avenue) between 5pm and 7pm:

Free balloon animals
Free face painting
Free entertainment
And of course, lots of great food & gift products to buy

And don’t worry about making supper. We have a concession and grill a mean hotdog.
Global Special: hotdog, drink and chips or chocolate bar for only $4

At The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse (9351 – 118 Avenue) between 5pm and 7pm:

Global weather live from The Carrot!
Live Entertainment
Bring a friend and enjoy a 2 for 1 Latte!

And you’ll be happy to know the construction on 118 Avenue is over for the season. You can once again drive in either direction. Happy Driving and see you on Thursday!

Please forward this information, add it to your facebook page, tweet it and spread the word anyhow you can!

Alberta Ave Gets a Facelift

Monday, May 12th, 2008

If you’ve driven down the Ave lately, you’ve noticed some major construction work going on. The Avenue Streetscape project has begun!

The Edmonton Journal/Canada.com story on this work can be found online here.

Momentum is Building …

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Did you hear about Friday Night at The Carrot? Cora McLachlan played and IT WAS PACKED OUT!! Yes there were some 65 people there. One person said it took him 15 minutes to get from the door to the counter to pay his cover charge – people & chairs were everywhere!

Things are really picking up at the Carrot. It seems word is spreading and seats are filling as the sun and the birds are returning to the Ave.

Be part of the revolution by stopping in for a simple cup of coffee – and community. Leckie Olsen plays this Friday night at 7, pinhole photography and the arts-market take over on Saturday and open stage returns Saturday night at 7:30. What an exciting time to live on and around the Ave!

Call to Artists: Design a Community Award

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

The excellent community paper in our neighborhood, the Rat Creek Press, has put out a call for designs for their new community award. Here are some excerpts, and you can download the full posting below.

The Rat Creek Press, a non-profit, volunteer-run community newspaper in North Central Edmonton, is looking for an artist to design an award to honour our community members in the areas of Building Community, Encouraging Communication and Increasing Capacity. This is a new award with an inaugural ceremony in late April of 2008.

The chosen artist will receive $500 plus a free ad in the Rat Creek Press. The artist will be acknowledged at our presentation ceremony in late April. Your design will be replicated for future awards. Upon selection, the artist may not sell, lease, rent or gift the design or prototype to other individuals or groups.

If you are still interested, you can get the full details here …

Edmonton Journal Talks Up Alberta Ave’s Bright Future

Scott McKeen has written another glowing article on the revitalization of Alberta Avenue. Is it any surprise that Arts on the Ave plays heavily in the piece. Also featured is the recent Deep Freeze Festival.

“Arts Alive! Bring Soul to the City” ~ Edmonton Journal

Friday, September 28th, 2007

“Today, a stroll down Alberta Avenue is a unique experience. You can drop into the indoor skatepark, pick up some “hot and spicy fresh food” or marital aids or Portuguese bread or organic vegetables, an acme juicer, Latin imports. All within a couple of blocks. A stranger will walk by, ask for a cigarette, and declare, “Let the good times roll!” A man in a suit and tie will pick up garbage.

The interpretation of the future, by Fassil Yenie, a recent immigrant, is a painting of a couple dancing a tango. It’s a magical image, hinting at a special moment and at timelessness. Like the humble carrot, it’s as good a symbol as any.”

~Todd Babiak, Edmonton Journal.
