Theme: Environments and Landscapes Explored

This annual family arts festival is a major highlight of the Arts On The Ave calendar. And this year, we’re taking it to the streets.  That’s right, our artists will create across the various landscapes of Alberta Avenue. Dancing on vertical surfaces, and rooftops. Theatre inside a moving vehicle. Fire and lanterns by night. An airbrushed VW minibus in the back alley. Romeo and Juliet in a playground. A cacophony of music played on car parts. Be prepared to experience art at street level.

Performance Details

Métis Mutt

The hilarious and heartbreaking one-man show that reveals the coming of age of a young Metis actor and comedian growing up between two cultures.
Starring and Written by: Sheldon Elter. Rated 14A for mature content.

Carjack! Theatre on Wheels…

Tired of walking? Hitch a ride with Edmonton Actor/Writer/Producer Clinton Carew in Edmonton’s most intimate theatre space: his car! Your fate is in his hands as he takes you
on a 15-minute mystery tour of the ‘hood. Watch out though, he may take you closer to the action than you bargained for.

Davie’s Coat

Surreal SoReal Theatre: Welcome to the Alley where Davie dies. Coat has waited forever for Davie’s Demise, and as Davie’s personal agent of death, this is his only chance to relieve the weight of the grim reaping business, and move on to a better after after life.
Written and Directed by Jon Lachlan Stewart. Rated PG-13 for mature content.

Pantaloonatics

The Pantoloonatics are back with their unique and delightful brand of physical comedy; performing vignettes inspired by vaudeville and silent film in a shop window.
Starring: Jana O’Connor, Beth Graham, Chris Bullough, and Kevin Sutley.

Firefly Theatre

21st Century Gargoyles. Look up. Look way up. Gargoyles of the past were used to ward off evil spirits and protect decent citizens. Are they watching over you – or simply watching you… Firefly Theatre presents an interactive aerial installation that is visually stimulating, thought-provoking, and slightly outrageous!

Kokopelli Choir

Kokopelli is known for a unique style of presentation, striving for high-quality musical delivery combined with creative staging. Listen and watch as a visual artist creates a new work in real-time, inspired by the music drifting from above.

Vertical Wall Dance: Bird Soul Productions

Eat your heart out Spider Man! Nicole Tritter and Company don’t just climb walls, they DANCE on them! Watch for this dance troupe as they challenge gravity and dance along the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts West Wall.

Asante Dance troupe

Asante, meaning “thank you” in Swahili is a Pan-African Dance Troupe established in 2006 to preserve and promote African cultures. They present vivacious dancers, songs and drum rhythms from various parts of Africa to educate and entertain the audience.

Shakespeare Al fresco

Experience Shakespeare as it was originally performed; outdoors in a rowdy atmosphere. Where better to see a play than a playground! Reserve your spot on the monkey bars to watch the action. Romeo: Murray Cullen / Juliet: Elena Porter Directed by Sharla Matkin

Cartet

Got road rage? We have the answer. Bill Damur conducts his four-on-the-floor musical dialogue between four cars and their drivers. A co-ordinated car cacaphony of horns, lights, revving, slamming and upset drivers. Sometimes it’s a pleasure to be stuck in traffic!

Firefly Theatre: Urban Safari

Our safari guides will take you on an adventurous on a tour of the Festival, pointing out the wonderful and terrible creatures that live amongst us. View the reclusive and seldom-
seen visual artist, venture into treacherous Theatre Alley…

Looking On the move

You’ll never know what hit you as seemingly-normal festival goers transform themselves into dancers, the street into their studio, and you into their audience. This urban dance team assembled by Julie Funk will prove to you that all the world’s a stage…
