Deep Freeze PSA #2
Come celebrate winter and celebrate New Year’s all over again, thanks to the Julian calendar, at the Deep Freeze: Byzantine Winter Festival, January 10 and 11. The festival takes places at Alberta Ave Community Centre, in the heart of Edmonton’s most interesting up-and-coming arts district. Deep Freeze, now in its second year, features a panoply of sights and sounds to delight the eye, the ear and even the stomach.
The visually inclined will be impressed by the works of dozens of artists and craftspeople, who work in diverse media, from silver to beads, from wood to textiles. Art is for viewing and for sale. Music lovers will be soothed by the sounds of mediaeval harp music during the day and can dance to the irrepressible Latin rhythms of Tilo Paiz and America Rosa on Saturday night. The hungry will be able to purchase delicious foods from different cultures: Ukrainian, Mexican and Salvadoran. There will also be a French Canadian cabane à sucre (maple taffy on snow) and hot dogs roasted on an open fire.
To burn off all those calories, people can choose from such outdoor activities as skating and curling, hay rides, snowshoeing. In addition, there will be snow sculpting workshops, and an ice sculpting contest sponsored by the Sculptors’ Society of Alberta
The festival is free. Tickets for the dance are only $10 for adults and can be purchased at Tix on the Square (tixonthesquare.com) or at the Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse (9351 – 118 Ave). The Alberta Ave Community Centre is located at 9210 – 118 Ave. Deep Freeze Festival is sponsored by Arts on the Ave Society, Sculptors’ Society of Alberta and the Avenue Initiative Revitalization.
