Songs From the Ave: Kaleido 08 Feature Project
Alberta Avenue is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Edmonton, once being the very outskirts of a city that would soon swallow up its neighboring town of Beverly.
Some of the Avenue residents have been here so long that they still remember that time.
And now we are perched on the doorstep of a revitalization project, and all that it brings to an old community in need of a lift. How do we connect the rich past to the darker present to a brighter future?
If these sidewalks could talk, the stories they would tell. If these streets could sing, the songs we would hear.
Connecting the past to the present gives people the foundation to envision a better future.
The songwriting talent in Edmonton is one of the best-kept secrets in all of Canada. This project
highlights some of the best writers our city has to offer, and will not only help to bring the Alberta Avenue community together, but also our thriving neighbourhoods, but sometimes overlooked, musical and artistic community as well. The project is also a means for these artists to work together, and make connections they might not otherwise have a chance to make. I believe that this will be a well-received CD, and it will shine some bright light on our local talent, neighborhood, and artistic scene.
This project started in June 2007 when it was picked as one of the major projects of the Canada Cultural Capital Campaign, and has also been funded by The Edmonton Arts Council, and the Avenue Initiative Revitalization Project.
The list of songwriters is:
Paul Bellows, Chris Wynters, Barry Westerlund, Joe Bird, Terry Morrison, Brent Oliver, White Cats, Dr Blu, Captain Tractor, James Murdoch, Scott Peters (Project Producer).
