Homeless – a play by Jeremy Baumung

Homeless play bannerIn 2006, Jeremy Baumung started working at the Spady Centre in Edmonton. The Spady is the place where people go when no one else will take them—It’s known as a “harm-reduction” centre.

Out of his experiences comes this powerful, new one-man show, Homeless, a funny, searing, moving journey through the lives of those who society tries its best to forget. But Homeless is also a story of Jeremy’s own religious journey from fundamentalist Christianity to a broader and more generous form of spirituality, a search for the true meaning of charity.

Jeremy Baumung’s first oneman show, Dead Man Talking, which described his survival of a meningitis attack that killed one of his college colleagues, was one of the most moving personal documents of the 2003 theatre scene. It was nominated for the Outstanding New Work, and sent him on tour as far as New Zealand.

Homeless is another such amazing personal document, performed by a young actor who isn’t afraid to take us into the dangerous territory where the best theatre happens.

Homeless was dramaturged and is directed by Kenneth Brown, whose name is associated with Canadian classics like Boy Groove, Be A Man, Letters in Wartime, and Life After Hockey. Ken’s other play on this year’s festival circuit is the delightful creation WATER.
