The Alberta Avenue Choir performing at The Carrot
“Sand and Sea” – the first single released featuring the Alberta Avenue Choir has been nominated for “Best Single/non album” by the 2012 MTC Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA). The song, written by Garth Prince, and recorded by Chris Wynters, is Garth’s personal reflection on missing his homeland of Namibia…”where the desert and the ocean meet”. The Alberta Avenue Choir was formed by music-loving community members to make the project come to life. Congratulations everyone!

About a month ago, a small group of writers began meeting Thursday mornings at the Carrot, writing and sharing together. That group has since grown, and it could include you!
The group meets every Thursday at 10 AM at The Carrot, and is free to join. Bring something to write with. Writers of all ages, genres and levels of experience are welcome to join. Call Anna Marie Sewell at 432-6711 or email her at prairiepomes@yahoo.ca for more information. Or, just come on Thursday with your favourite pen and writing paper.

Since part of the good of having a circle comes from connecting to the larger community, we hope to provide many opportunities to meet with some of the fine writers in our community. We’re starting off mighty – Linda Goyette is set to join us on June 26th!? ?Linda is a distinguished journalist, as well as editor of several notable projects including: Edmonton in Our Own Words and Kidmonton:True Stories of River City Kids. She is the recipient of the 2005 Grant MacEwan Community College Authors’ Award, was the first Edmonton Public Library Writer in Residence, and is currently leading a group at Sprucewood Library that explores the history of our own neighbourhoods.

Did you hear about Friday Night at The Carrot? Cora McLachlan played and IT WAS PACKED OUT!! Yes there were some 65 people there. One person said it took him 15 minutes to get from the door to the counter to pay his cover charge – people & chairs were everywhere!
Things are really picking up at the Carrot. It seems word is spreading and seats are filling as the sun and the birds are returning to the Ave.
