The Carrot Packed All Weekend!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

There may have been a fall chill in the air this weekend (especially Saturday), but that chill disappeared the moment one walked into The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse. Certainly, one could say it was the warmth of good music that took it away. And the music WAS great. I was able to hear it all day Saturday as I hosted The Carrot stage. Lynette McKell and The Low Flying Planes were an incredible ensemble with guitars, 3 vocalists, bass, banjo, piano and accordian (not all at the same time, mind you). The energy continued throughout the day with the smooth Jazz of Karen Porkka and Mo LeFebvre, the infectious beats of Pre-Post and the folk stylings of Leckie Olsen and Cora McLachlan. Yes, such music would warm any cold soul, but it’s not the music I’m talking about.

One could also say it was the excellent coffee, cinnamon buns and treats served by our hardworking volunteer baristas that brought relief from the chill, but I’m talking about something more literal than all of that.

Body count!

Yes, that’s right. The sheer amount of people packed into the Carrot like art-loving sardines on Saturday and Sunday was enough to warm even the coldest winter day. And this particular weekend NOT being winter, it was VERY hot in there!

If you were able to stop in and helps us celebrate Kaleido this weekend, thank you for your support. And thank you for raising the temperature of the Carrot!

Here are some photos I shot throughout the day at the Festival. If you have some photos you’d like to add to this collection, please email them to info@artsontheave.org. See you at our next festival, Byzantine Winter Festival 2009!

We Need Your Milk Cartons

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The Arts on the Ave organizers are asking all you milk drinkers out there (and you know who you are) to donate empty plastic two- and four–litre containers to be made into lanterns for the Kaleido Family Arts festival Parade of Light.

Alternatively, the creative among you could make your own lantern for the Sept 27 evening.

Drop off empty containers at the Carrot.

Byzantine Winter Adventure – Deep Freeze Festival!

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Deep Freeze Winter Festival
Just when you thought the holiday festivities were over, The Sculptors’ Association of Alberta, in partnership with Arts on the Ave and the Avenue Initiative & City of Edmonton brings you Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Adventure. Mid January marks the start of the New Year on the Julian calendar, providing the perfect excuse for a mid-winter festival with a Byzantine twist.

On January 12th, 2008 between 11 am and 5pm, join us on Alberta Avenue for a day of family activities including hay rides, broomball and snowshoeing workshops, snow sculpting workshops, indoor art experiences, ancient music, and Ukrainian food.

The centrepiece feature of the festival is the Sculptors’ Association of Alberta’s “one block challenge” ice sculpture competition. Starting at 11 am, ice sculptors will rev up their chainsaws, hone their chisels and transform blocks of ice into beautiful pieces of art. The top three winners will be announced at 4pm and the display will remain on the Avenue for public viewing throughout the week. Local artists Ritchie Velthuis and Stuart Ballah will create an ice sculpture of Byzantine proportions to stand as a backdrop for the sculpture competition. All activities are free and are scheduled to run throughout the day in and around the Alberta Avenue community hall at 9210-118th Avenue.
