The ‘Exquisite Corpse’ … an evolving canvas created by four artists adding to a composition in sequence… one artist works on a section of the painting, provides the bottom strip of that piece for the next artist to work from, who hands it off to yet another artist.
Each artist has approximately 1.5 hours to work on their section. They will not know the theme or available materials in advance. They will not see the work of previous artists, although festival-goers will have access to these!
A canvas will be completed for both Saturday and Sunday of the Kaleido Festival, revealed on Central Stage towards the end of each festival day.
All entries must be RECEIVED on or before Thursday, March 31, 2011.
Names of eligible artists will be added to a hat. Four artists will be drawn on April 1st, 2011, for participation in the ‘Exquisite Corpse’, September 10-11, 2011!
Participating artists will receive an honorarium of $200.00.
The sixth annual Kaleido Family Arts Festival kicks off on September 9, 2011. This 2 ½ day avante garde festival celebrates the arts with family, encouraging community to become both artist and audience! It is a multi-disciplinary collaboration that showcases both emerging and established artists across all media and disciplines through the creative use of space – including streetscapes, sides and roofs of buildings, and alleyways. Last year we had a trombone choir on a rooftop, grande piano in a back alley, and dancers suspended from the sides of buildings!
The Kaleido Festival brings accessible and affordable arts to Alberta Avenue, while promoting diversity through multiculturalism and inter-generational expression. Our festival draws people into the community from other areas of the City to experience and explore the richness and diversity of Alberta Avenue.
If you were able to join us for the kickoff last night, you may have caught Swiss Family Robinson on the outdoor screen in the brisk night air or heard the streets swaying to blues and bluegrass. The Bernard Boisvert Gallery saw many guests and the theatre began as well.
Today there are many, many highlights. The Avenue Central stage (9210 118th ave) boasts several acts, closing off the night with a dance-worthy Dehli2Dublin concert at 9:45 PM. Four theatre productions take place throughout the day and the sprawling Bernard Boisvert Gallery awaits as well, promising even more great music. The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse keeps the music playing with a fine roster of singer songwriters throughout the day. At various spots throughout the festival you’ll find workshops, from paper making to yo-yo skills, and local artists and artisans selling their creations.
Sounds like a lot to do, doesn’t it? Well, we haven’t even mentioned the Artists and Landscape pieces yet. Watch for living gargoyles on the Nina Haggerty building, dancers on the wall, theatre in a car, a grand piano in the back alley and more.
You can also get right into the arts with Spill at the Avenue Theatre from 12-6 PM.
It all starts off this morning at 10 AM at Avenue Central (92nd street and 118th ave) with a free Pancake Breakfast. Come hungry for food, art and community!
Yesterday morning, September 9, 2010, the Kaleido Festival was featured on Global Edmonton. It was great to have Global come down to The Ave and cover the event, helping spread the word about the great festival that is about to hit Edmonton’s streets.
The Kaleido Family Arts Festival will be held on Sept. 10-12, 2010. See the website at http://kaleidofest.ca/
