Althea Cunningham Live at The Carrot

Monday, March 10th, 2008

In years past she’s taken workshops with jazz giants; Sheila Jordan and Nancy King courtesy The Edmonton International Jazz Festival. By day is a freelance writer: who contributes to entertainment journalism (CURVE Magazine), poetry, spoken word and playwrighting. She also helps shape young minds and guides them toward a life of agony in the arts; by way of instructing musical theatre classes and private voice lessons at One Dance Creative School. By night she hangs upside down in trees, with branches and thorns watching each move, when the blood rushes to her head and she has had enough she crafts poignant stories about: love, relationships, loss and social issues. Often in childhood you’d find her playing the rhythm on most things in sight: including her mother’s behind… and she brings that same energy to every show. Her vocals are smooth and her animated presence is sure to leave an imprint on your soul. At heart, she is a jazz and blues chile and spent many years hovered behind kitchen utensils belting out tunes and baking sweet potato pie.

Summer of 2006, she decided to hit the streets, cafes and clubs and hasn’t missed a beat since. From that The Althea Cunningham Group (jazz&blues covers) was born, one year later another group was formed Althea Cunningham Duo (original R&B and Soul) tunes. As a youngster her parents brought home an eclectic mixture of music much of which influences her style today. This classically trained vocalist developed through choir’s ensembles, accapella group’s musical theatre and opera and it has certainly paid off. It is her passion; in blues terms that Keeps her Keepin’On.

She has had an amazing career as she works in: music, theatre, film and television. Some Highlights have been shows with Citadel Theatre, Manitoba Theatre Centre, National Ice Theatre of Canada, Theatre Calgary and a three seasons with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in the Twins and The Monster composed by the incredible John Estacio. Many times you’ll find her penning the lyrics to a new tune, singing jazz and blues but she not limited to those styles and always seeks growth as an artist. A single will be released later this year and a debut project in the works.
