Public Sculptures on Alberta Avenue

Arts on the Ave is engaged with the city and dedicated to the community through the cultivation of positive urban renewal. These installations are a series of artworks on loan from the Vancouver Biennale to Arts on the Ave as part of an effort to transform the Alberta Avenue District into a creative arts district. It is through culture-led urban regeneration initiatives, a vision of creative spaces and place-making that these art-infused communities have begun to flourish and provide a safe, nurturing community for artists to thrive.

About Vancouver Biennale
Vancouver Biennale is a non-profit charitable organization that exhibits great art in public space, as a catalyst for learning, community engagement, and social action. Their exhibitions are unique in the world in that we feature sculpture, new media, film, music and performance. They transform the urban landscape into an Open Air Museum, creating unexpected and globally inspired cultural experiences where people live, play, work and transit. With each exhibition, they demonstrate that great public art is an economic driver by creating magnetic cultural attractions for visitors, and foundational to creating livable, creatively inspired communities where installations become a social bridge for people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, educational levels and financial wherewithal to come together as neighbours to explore, learn, dialogue and imagine.

let’s heal the divide

let’s heal the divide, a piece by Toni Latour. In this incredibly divisive time, Toni Latour's piece calls on all of us to take action toward healing. Toward reconciliation. Toward anti-racism. Toward equality.

The Golden Pig

金猪 Golden Pig is an art installation that explores the contrasting cultural meanings associated with the concept of a pig. Drawing upon the Chinese zodiac and Western perceptions, artist Yong Fei Guan invites viewers to contemplate waste and its impact, urging a reevaluation of our waste systems.

Love Your Bean

The sculptures in Love Your Bean break the boundaries that exist between objects and humans. Cosimo Cavallaro’s incredible installation compels one to touch them, crossing borders when you allow yourself to be led by your senses. Take a scroll or a stroll and enjoy these beans!

Walking Figures

Walking Figures is a group of headless, cast-iron figures by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz. They appear to be walking aimlessly without sight, and the sombre tone makes reference to both time and loss. Learn more by clicking the link below.

The Meeting

It is not without irony that the red figures are placed in a circle, static and crouching with cupped hands, open to various interpretations, from one of thoughtful contemplation to one of latent energy ready to leap up. Although Alberta Avenue’s favourite red gentlemen have moved to a new home, we are glad to have the time we had with them! Learn more about the meeting below.
